Tesla’s revenue grew tenfold between 2012 and 2015. Its expenses, however, kept pace and it has not shown a profit. Investors were undeterred. Tesla’s stock price grew from $34 at the end of 2012 to $240 at the end of 2015. The data is summarized in the stacked bar chart below:
Adding a net line to a stacked bar chart allowed me to show revenue expenses and net profit in the same chart. I used a legend to identify the three variables. Bar totals contain the revenue and expense amounts for each year. I added the values to the net lines to show net profits. I also increased my bar gaps to widen the spaces between bars to make room for the net line values. I added stock price as a data row and hid the Y axis.
