National governments who shut down all or part of the internet cost their economies more than $2.4 billion over the past year, according to a Brookings Institute study. Ten countries account for almost all of the $2.4B GDP loss and 7 of the 10 are located in South Asia and the Middle East. India is by far the largest. The Marimekko chart below summarizes the costs by country and by region:
This is a relatively simple Marimekko chart with only 12 segments organized into three bars. I grouped the smallest 9 countries into the ‘Other’ series and grouped the countries outside of South Asia and the Middle East into a ‘Rest of World’ bar.
You can edit the chart below to see each country. You can also add other regions (e.g., North Africa and South America). This will add more bars and more segments with annotated labels and make the chart a bit more cluttered. I would encourage you to try this alternative and see which you like better.
