A smaller percentage of Americans 20-24 have are driving, while a much larger percentage of those 70-74 year are. Federal Highway Administration data for 1994 and 2017 are compared in the cluster bar chart on the left. There was a 93% increase in the number of licensed drivers age 70-74 and just a 15% increase in those 20-24 between 1994 and 2017 as shown in the right chart.

Driving Among Younger and Older Americans in two Cluster Bar Charts with Segment Comparison Lines

Cluster bar charts comparing percentage of 20-24 and 70-74 year olds with driver's licenses and the number of licensed drivers in the two age groups.

Data on driving among 20-24 and 70-74 year olds is presented below:

Data for cluster bar charts comparing percentage of 20-24 and 70-74 year olds with driver's licenses and the number of licensed drivers in the two age groups.

I used the same data for both charts.  In the left chart, I showed just the last two series and in the right chart I showed the first two.

Here's how I made the left chart:

  • add a half page cluster bar chart to PowerPoint
  • copy and paste the driving data from Excel into the Mekko Graphics Data Editor
  • right-click on the A2 and A3 to not show these series in the chart
  • add y axis title and uncheck autowrap for the title
  • change the y axis maximum to .92
  • format bar totals as percentages
  • adjust internal chart margins to fill the horizontal space of the chart
  • shrink the bar gaps to make the bars wider
  • change the series colors
  • add the segment comparison lines and show

Here's how I made the right chart:

  • copy and paste the left chart and move it to the right of the slide, aligned with the left chart
  • open the chart
  • in the Format Axis dialog to make the y axis computed and to change the y axis title
  • in the Bars and Series dialog indicate that the first two series should be displayed on chart and the last two not displayed
  • change the data scaling to divide the numbers by 1,000 converting thousands to millions
  • format the bar totals with M as suffix
  • change the y axis maximum to 19M
  • change the format of the segment comparison lines to show both value and percentage
