Ethno-nationalists and separatists were responsible for over 60% of the terrorism attacks in the EU in 2018, as shown in these marimekko charts. The UK and France were the primary target countries. 56 of the 129 incidents were ethno-nationalist or separatist incidents that took place in the United Kingdom. Jihadists were responsible for 24 of the incidents, with 10 of the 24 taking place in France. Data on failed, foiled and completed terror attacks came from the EU Terrorism Situation and Trend Report 2019.

How I Made These Marimekko Charts
Data for these charts are presented below:
The EU report contained the terrorism incident data by affiliation and by country and then linked the two sets of data with a flow graph. I needed to use some eyeballing to determine the data by affiliation within each country.
Here's how I made the Marimekko chart on the right:
- input terrorism incident data into Excel and create a Marimekko chart in PowerPoint based on the selected Excel data range
- adjust the internal chart margins to make the left and right chart margins very narrow
- close the chart and adjust the chart container size so that it is about 3/4 of the page width
- hide x and y axes and grand total
- make segment borders white and thinner
- make chart borders white
- adjust colors of each series
- sort bars with widest on left and sort series with biggest on bottom
- reduce font size and slant right-most bar labels
- reduce font size of right most bar totals
- make vertical segment labels in thinner bars
- hide segment labels in two right-most bars
To create the total Marimekko chart:
- create a copy of the left hand chart
- shrink the width of the copied chart to take up about about 1/4 of the slide width
- add a column to Mekko Graphics Data Editor for sum of terrorism data by affiliations across countries
- select all country bars and do not show them on chart
- unhide y axis values and increase left margin so they show on chart
- align the two charts so that they appear next to each other with a small gap between the two Marimekko charts
