While the Supreme Court’s recognition of same sex marriage is big news, most people in the world do not live in a country in which gay marriage is legal.  The countries that recognize same sex marriage are mostly in the Americas and Europe, while the vast majority of the world’s population is in Asia and  Africa.  The Marimekko chart below shows the percentage of the population in each continent that live in countries in which same sex marriage is legal.

The second Marimekko chart completes the picture by enumerating the countries in which same sex marriage is legal.  Five countries in the Americas–US, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay–contain about 60% of the people and all recognize same sex marriage.  While 14 European countries that account for only 33% of the people recognize same sex marriage.  Large European countries including Germany, Italy and Spain are missing from the chart.
