Pedestrian fatalities have been rising at about 5%/year and reached 6,283 in 2018, as shown in the bar chart on the left. They are more likely to occur after dark and there’s a good chance that pedestrian and/or driver is alcohol impaired, as shown in the right 100% stacked bar chart. Pedestrian fatalities are most likely to occur on major streets, although 16% occur on freeways. Passenger cars are involved 42% of the time and vans, trucks and buses are involved only 12% of the time. Pedestrian fatalities data come from the Governors Highway Safety Association.

How I Made this Bar Chart and 100% Stacked Bar Chart
Pedestrian fatalities data for these charts are presented below:
Here's how I made the bar chart on the left:
- use a pdf to csv converter to extract (e.g., pdftables) to extract the pedestrian fatalities data from the GHSA pdf
- create a stacked bar chart in PowerPoint from the Excel data range shown on the left (A1:B11)
- adjust the chart size to be a 1/2 page chart and place it on the left hand side of the slide
- use Switch Bars and Series button in Edit Chart ribbon to treat rows as bars
- add the y axis
- hide segment labels and y axis (except for title)
- change series colors
- adjust internal chart margins
- add growth line and display CAGR value in label
Here's how I made the 100% stacked bar chart on the right:
- copy and paste the bar chart and place it to the right of the bar chart
- change its position to be to the right of the bar chart
- type in the pedestrian fatalities data on the right into the Mekko Graphics Data Editor
- show labels and values in all bars and format the values to show as a percentage
- add the y axis title
- hide the y axis (except for title) and adjust the bar gaps to make the bars larger
- reduce the size or hide the labels in smaller segments
- use a custom sort order for the bars to show them in the order as in the chart above
- adjust the series colors to make each bar shades of a different color
