Air Conditioning Around the World

The scorching summer in the Northern Hemisphere has left many with a renewed appreciation for air conditioning.  June was the hottest June on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Temperatures in France reached all-time highs and other cities in North America, Europe and Asia experienced record heat waves in both June and July. If you have air conditioning, your energy costs soared along with the temperatures. However, you were at least able to mitigate the health risks associated with the heat.

There are 1.6B installed air conditioning units (AC) and 67% of them are in just 3 countries—China, the US and Japan. The current household penetration rate for air conditioning is above 90% in Japan and the US, but it is just 60% in China. It's below 20% in large, hot countries like Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa and India.

Forecasters from the International Energy Agency (IEA) are projecting significant increases in air conditioning units due to factors like economic growth, urbanization and population growth. Data from the IEA was published in their Future of Cooling report.

  • On the Series tab, create an Other series and include all series except China, US and Japan
  • Under Show Labels, choose Show Values and Names, Calculated Percentages Only
  • Convert the data to billions by choosing a data scale value of 3 on the Values tab under Format Chart
  • Add the billions unit (B) to the bar total on the Values tab
