Baggage revenue was close to flat for American, United and Delta--the three largest carriers. It was up between 24% and 29% per year for the next three--Spirit, Frontier and JetBlue. How I Made This Stacked Bar Chart with CAGR Column
Data for this chart are presented below:
The baggage fee data are available for download in Excel on the web. The data required some manipulation to get it into the form above. First, data had to be taken from multiple worksheets, one for each year, into a single worksheet. Next, data for US Airways had to be summed into American for some pre-merger years and the same process was required for Continental and United. Finally, I added the CAGR data using the Mekko Graphics built-in CAGR formula.
Here's how I made the stacked bar chart:
- created a chart in PowerPoint from the data range above in Excel
- used Format Bars and Series to show the last column as a CAGR
- added the legend and aligned the legend with the CAGR
- hid the axis lines, labels and tick marks
- added the y axis label
- adjusted internal chart margins, y axis maximum and font sizes
- changed colors of series to highlight Spirit, Frontier and JetBlue and place American, Delta and United in shades of grey
