Wonder Woman set the record for the biggest opening weekend for a film directed by a woman with an opening box office of $100.5M.  It also was only the 16th superhero movie to break $100 million dollars domestically in its opening weekend.  Wonder Woman’s box office was over 4 times greater than the second place movie, Captain Underpants.  In addition, its average box office per location of $24,131 was over 3 times higher than Captain Underpants.  The chart below, based on data from comScore, summarizes the domestic box office, distributor, number of locations, and average box office per location for the top 12 movies in the U.S. during the weekend of June 2, 2017.The chart summarizes the domestic box office, distributor, number of locations, and average box office per location for the top 12 movies in the U.S. during the weekend of June 2, 2017

The data for the chart is available for download in Excel format from comScore.  From the Excel, I used the Mekko Graphics Excel add-in to create a stacked bar chart in PowerPoint.  I then used the switch bars/series button in Mekko Graphics to treat the columns as series and the rows as bars.  Next I moved the distributor, number of locations, and location average data from the chart to data rows.  I adjusted the font sizes and margins to handle the multiple data rows and the long movie names.  I also adjusted the y axis maximum value from $15oM to $100M.

The data row and data column features of Mekko Graphics can be very useful when you have multiple different types of data to display alongside your chart.  In this chart, we added both numeric and text data to each movie.  This allowed the reader to see which studio (distributor) made the movie and to add supplemental performance measures.

Here is the chart in SlideShare to download and edit using Mekko Graphics:
